Ingredients

  • 4 medium-large potatoes
  • ½ onion (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper (or to taste)

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Potatoes

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into small wedges or fry-shaped slices. Aim for uniform sizes to ensure even cooking.
  2. Rinse the peeled potatoes in cold water to remove excess starch. Lay them out on a cutting board and pat dry with paper towels.

Step 2: Prepare the Onion (Optional)

  1. Dice the onion finely.
  2. In a large frying pan, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium-high heat.
  3. Add the diced onion and sauté for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened and fragrant.

Step 3: Cook the Potatoes

  1. Add the prepared potatoes to the pan with 2 tablespoons of oil. Toss everything together to coat evenly.
  2. Cover the pan with a dome-shaped lid (if available) and cook over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes, allowing the potatoes to develop a golden crust.
  3. Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking for approximately 15 minutes, stirring every 3-4 minutes to prevent sticking and ensure even browning.

Step 4: Season and Check Doneness

  1. Sprinkle the potatoes with salt and pepper towards the end of cooking. Stir to distribute the seasoning evenly.
  2. Check for doneness by breaking one of the larger slices. The potato should break easily when fully cooked.

Serve warm as a comforting side dish or enjoy on its own!

FAQs

Can I use other types of potatoes?
Yes, Yukon Gold or red potatoes work well and may require slightly less cooking time.

Do I need to use both butter and oil?
The combination of butter and oil enhances flavor and prevents burning, but you can use just one if preferred.

Can I make this ahead of time?
These potatoes are best served fresh, but you can reheat them in a skillet over medium heat to restore their crispness.

Serving

  • Serve as a side dish with roasted meats, grilled fish, or fried eggs.
  • Pair with sour cream or a creamy dip for added richness.

Suggestions

  • For a heartier option, mix in cooked bacon or sausage during the final minutes of cooking.
  • Add a sprinkle of grated cheese on top while the potatoes are still warm for a melty finish.
