Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb ground coffee (~3 1/4 cups)
  • 8 cups boiling water
  • 8 cups ice-cold water
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk

Instructions

Prepare the Coffee Concentrate:

  1. In a large heatproof bowl or pot, add the ground coffee.
  2. Pour 8 cups of boiling water over the coffee grounds. Stir to ensure all grounds are saturated, and let it sit for 5 minutes. (If grinding your own coffee, avoid grinding it too fine, as it may pass through the cheesecloth.)

Strain the Coffee:

  1. If using a French press, strain the coffee in batches. Alternatively, place a colander over a clean heatproof bowl or jug and line it with six layers of cheesecloth. Slowly pour the coffee through the lined colander.
  2. Discard the coffee grounds after straining.

Cool and Store:

  1. Add 8 cups of ice-cold water to the strained coffee concentrate and stir to combine.
  2. Transfer the concentrate to a sealed container and refrigerate. This concentrate will stay fresh for 3 weeks to a month.

Serve the Iced Coffee:

  1. Fill a tall glass or mason jar almost to the brim with ice.
  2. Pour the coffee concentrate over the ice.
  3. Add 1–2 tablespoons of sweetened condensed milk, adjusting to your preferred sweetness.
  4. Stir thoroughly to ensure the condensed milk is fully incorporated.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Versatile: Easily adjust the sweetness and strength to suit your taste.
  • Long-Lasting: The coffee concentrate can be prepared ahead of time and stored for up to a month.
  • Refreshing: Perfectly chilled coffee for hot days or as an afternoon pick-me-up.

Tips

  • Use coarse-ground coffee for the best results when straining.
  • For extra creaminess, add a splash of milk or half-and-half in addition to the condensed milk.
  • Ensure the coffee is well chilled before serving for the best flavor.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Replace sweetened condensed milk with coconut condensed milk for a dairy-free option.
  • Add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg for a spiced coffee twist.
  • Try using flavored coffee beans, such as vanilla or hazelnut, for a unique flavor profile.

FAQs

Can I use decaf coffee for this recipe?
Absolutely! Decaf works just as well if you want to enjoy the taste of iced coffee without the caffeine.

How can I make this less sweet?
Simply reduce the amount of condensed milk or omit it altogether, using milk or cream instead.

Can I make this without cheesecloth?
Yes, a fine mesh sieve or coffee filter can be used as an alternative.

Serving and Suggestions

  • Serve with a straw or a tall spoon for easy stirring.
  • Pair with a light breakfast pastry, like a croissant or scone.
  • Add whipped cream and a drizzle of caramel for a decadent treat.
