Ingredients:

  • 1 (16-ounce) block firm or extra-firm tofu, drained
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions:

To Prepare the Tofu:

  1. Wrap the tofu block completely in two layers of paper towels. Ensure that all sides are covered, and place the wrapped tofu on a plate or cutting board.
  2. Place a heavy skillet on top of the tofu and let it press for 30 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  3. After 30 minutes, remove the skillet and discard the paper towels. Wrap the tofu in fresh, dry paper towels, ensuring it is fully covered.
  4. Place the wrapped tofu back on the plate or cutting board, and press it again with the skillet for another 30 minutes.
  5. After the second press, remove the skillet and unwrap the tofu, discarding the paper towels.

To Air Fry the Tofu:

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 380°F (193°C).
  2. Cut the pressed tofu into evenly-sized cubes and pat each cube dry on all sides with paper towels.
  3. Sprinkle salt generously over all sides of the tofu cubes.
  4. Arrange the tofu cubes in the air fryer basket in a single layer, working in batches if needed to avoid overcrowding. Lightly spray the cubes with neutral oil spray and shake the basket to ensure the oil is evenly distributed.
  5. Air fry the tofu for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, shake the basket to toss the tofu and check for doneness.
  6. Continue air frying in 5-minute intervals, shaking the basket each time and checking the tofu until it reaches your desired level of crispiness. See notes for recommended cooking times.
  7. Once the tofu is perfectly crisp, carefully remove the basket and transfer the tofu to a bowl or serving plate. Toss the tofu in your favorite sauce if desired, or serve immediately with your preferred dipping sauce.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

This Air Fryer Tofu is the ultimate easy, crispy, and delicious plant-based dish. The tofu comes out perfectly golden and crispy on the outside, while staying tender on the inside—just like deep-fried tofu, but without the added oil! It’s a healthier alternative, quick to prepare, and versatile enough to be paired with any of your favorite sauces or served alongside grains and veggies. Whether you’re making a quick snack or preparing a meal, this air fryer tofu is sure to satisfy!

Tips

  • Pressing the tofu is key: Make sure to press the tofu well to remove excess moisture for the crispiest result. The longer you press, the better the texture will be.
  • Pat the tofu cubes dry: After cutting the tofu into cubes, ensure they are completely dry to help them crisp up in the air fryer.
  • Avoid overcrowding: For the best results, do not overcrowd the air fryer basket. Air needs to circulate around each tofu cube to achieve the perfect crispiness.
  • Adjust cooking time: Cooking times may vary depending on the size of your tofu cubes and the type of air fryer. Check the tofu every 5 minutes for doneness.

Variations and Substitutions

  • Tofu variety: You can use firm, extra-firm, or even super-firm tofu for this recipe. Just ensure it’s well-drained.
  • Spices and seasonings: Feel free to experiment with different seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, or cayenne pepper for extra flavor.
  • Oil: You can use a variety of oils for spraying, such as olive oil, avocado oil, or coconut oil, depending on your preference.

FAQs

How do I know when the tofu is done? The tofu should be golden brown and crispy on the outside. If you prefer it extra crispy, continue air frying in 5-minute intervals until it reaches your desired crispiness.

Can I skip pressing the tofu? Pressing the tofu is crucial to remove excess moisture. Skipping this step may result in a soggy texture. For best results, always press your tofu before cooking.

Can I make this recipe without an air fryer? Yes, you can bake the tofu in the oven at 400°F (200°C) for 25-30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until it’s golden and crispy.

Serving Suggestions

Air fryer tofu can be served in a variety of ways:

  • As a snack: Pair with a dipping sauce like soy sauce, sriracha, or peanut sauce.
  • In a bowl: Serve over rice, quinoa, or noodles with veggies and your favorite sauce for a wholesome meal.
  • In wraps: Add crispy tofu to a wrap with fresh greens, avocado, and a drizzle of dressing.
  • On salads: Top a salad with crispy tofu cubes for added protein and crunch.
